Estadio Azteca owner invites Canelo Álvarez to headline boxing match
Emilio Azcárraga Jean, president of Grupo Ollamani, has issued a public invitation to Mexican boxing star Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez to headline a professional boxing event at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The proposal aims to replicate the historic atmosphere of February 20, 1993, when Julio César Chávez fought Greg Haugen in front of more than 132,000 spectators, setting a Guinness World Record for boxing attendance. Azcárraga expressed that hosting a fight of Álvarez’s caliber would be worthwhile to honor the legacy of Chávez and demonstrate the stadium's versatility.
Following recent infrastructure renovations, the management of Estadio Azteca seeks to diversify the venue's use beyond professional football, establishing it as a multi-purpose international sports hub capable of hosting major athletics, exhibitions, and high-level boxing matches.
