Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona seeks 2030 World Cup hosting status

Authorities in La Plata, Argentina, are promoting the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona as a potential venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. While FIFA had previously ratified the Estadio Monumental, local officials, including Mayor Julio Alak and stadium director Fernando Islas Casares, are asserting the stadium's candidacy to host matches on Argentine soil.

Renovation works at the facility are currently 25% complete, with an official reopening planned for late November, potentially featuring a friendly match between the Argentine and German women's national teams. The comprehensive upgrade plan, funded by the Argentine Football Association (AFA), includes repairing the roof structure, installing LED lighting, replacing all seating, and installing professional-grade turf.

The stadium previously hosted the 2011 Copa América and the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. It has also been inspected by FIFA representatives and is designated by the AFA as ‘the house of the National Team’.
