Estado de México begins 2027 electoral cycle amid irregularities
The State of Mexico has formally entered the electoral cycle for 2027. The upcoming elections will determine 125 municipal governments and 75 deputies for the state legislature. In total, more than 1,200 positions are up for contest, including mayoralties, syndics, and councilors.
Concerns regarding the integrity of the process have emerged early, with the State Electoral Institute (IEEM) reporting 95 files related to potential electoral irregularities. These include 74 sanctioning procedures. Additionally, there is growing national concern regarding the potential infiltration of organized crime into political candidacies and local governments.
