Estado de México calls for parental help with school maintenance
The Secretariat of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (SECTI) in the State of Mexico has called for increased involvement from parents and families to address school needs. Miguel Ángel Hernández Espejel, head of SECTI, suggested that participation should extend beyond school fees to include direct community activities such as cleaning days and various maintenance campaigns.
Critics argue that this approach risks shifting government responsibilities onto families. While parental involvement in cultural and academic activities is seen as beneficial, there are concerns that using families to perform maintenance, repairs, and conditioning of public facilities effectively uses them as free labor to cover budgetary and planning deficiencies that should be addressed by the state.
