Estado de México Legislature simplifies state award categories

The State of Mexico Legislature has approved a reform to reconfigure and simplify the categories of the ‘Estado de México’ award (Presea ‘Estado de México’). Proposed by Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez, the initiative aims to align the recognition process with the principle of republican austerity, optimizing the use of public resources while maintaining institutional honors for outstanding citizens.

The reform reduces the number of annual awards from 15 to eight. Under the new decree, the awards will no longer bear the names of historical figures from the state.

New categories include:

• Scientific, Technological, and Educational Merit: Honoring contributions to research, innovation, teaching, and the advancement of knowledge. • Culture and Indigenous Peoples: Recognizing those who promote art, cultural expression, and the defense of indigenous rights, languages, and traditions. • Economic, Environmental, and Social Development: Highlighting individuals who generate a positive impact on sustainable development and quality of life within the state.
