Estado de México proposes dissolving INFOEM transparency institute

The government of the State of Mexico, led by Delfina Gómez Álvarez, has submitted an initiative to the local legislature to enact a new Law of Transparency and Access to Public Information. This reform proposes the dissolution of the Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data of the State of Mexico and Municipalities (INFOEM).

Under the proposal, the functions previously held by the autonomous INFOEM would be redistributed into a new “transparency subsystem.” The Executive Branch and municipalities would fall under the jurisdiction of a new entity called Transparencia Mexiquense, while the Legislative and Judicial branches would manage their own obligations regarding information requests and resources.

The reform has met with conflicting opinions in the Mexiquense Congress. Supporters, such as Deputy Gerardo Pliegos of Morena, argue the change will reduce public spending. Conversely, critics like Omar Ortega Álvarez of the PRD view the move as a setback for transparency and accountability.
