Estado de México records over 9,000 insured car thefts in 2026
In the State of Mexico, 9,110 insured vehicle thefts have been recorded so far in 2026, according to data from the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS). This figure places the entity in first place for this crime, though it does not account for uninsured vehicles. Based on vehicle park statistics, it is estimated that for every insured car stolen, between 2.3 and 2.7 uninsured cars are also taken, potentially totaling an additional 21,000 thefts between January and October.
Statistical trends indicate that March saw the highest number of thefts with 1,102 incidents, followed by January with 1,101. The most frequent days for these crimes are Tuesday and Wednesday, and the highest incidence occurs during the morning hours between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Approximately 56 percent of thefts in the state involve violence, although this trend has decreased since 2021.
High-risk municipalities include Cuautitlán Izcalli, Coacalco, Ecatepec, Tlalnepantla, Tultitlán, and Tecámac. In the Toluca Valley, the most affected areas are the neighborhoods of Francisco Murguía-El Ranchito and Vértice, as well as Jilotepec in the north of the state.
