Esteban Ocon proposes engine solutions for Formula 1

Formula 1 driver Esteban Ocon has proposed alternative engine configurations to address ongoing criticisms regarding current hybrid power units. The existing 1.6-liter V6 turbo hybrid systems have faced scrutiny due to significant power drops when batteries are depleted, with output reportedly falling from over 1,000 horsepower to approximately 550 horsepower.

Ocon suggested that a combination of naturally aspirated engines, such as V8s or V10s, paired with limited hybrid technology could provide superior drivability by using electricity to compensate for low-end torque deficits. He also noted the possibility of a non-electric approach using twin-turbo setups, though he observed that biturbo racing cars have not frequently been successful.

While Ocon is set to leave Haas at the end of the season, he expressed interest in remaining in Formula 1 through 2027, potentially in a reserve driver capacity. His comments come as the FIA reviews power unit parameters following the removal of the MGU-H to reduce costs and attract new manufacturers like Audi.
