Estefanía Laterza nominated as Paraguay's ambassador to the United States
The Paraguayan Senate's Foreign Relations Commission has unanimously approved the nomination of Estefanía Laterza de los Ríos to serve as the country's ambassador to the United States. The nomination now moves to the full Senate for a constitutional agreement vote.
During her presentation to legislators, Laterza outlined a strategic work plan focused on strengthening bilateral ties through investments, technology, and security. Key objectives include attracting U.S. financing via agencies such as the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and Eximbank, and expanding the presence of Paraguayan beef in the American market. She also proposed establishing a large-scale data center in Paraguay, leveraging the nation's renewable energy and technological partnerships.
Despite some internal opposition from certain sectors of the Colorado Party, the political outlook for the nomination remains favorable. Senator Antonio Barrios and Senate President Basilio Núñez have indicated support, citing Laterza's 30-year career in diplomacy and her professional qualifications. The appointment is viewed as a critical move by the administration of President Santiago Peña to enhance economic and technological cooperation with the United States.
