Estepona begins clearing 50 riverbeds to prevent floods

The Estepona City Council has launched a clearing campaign targeting more than 50 riverbeds, stream crossings, and rivers located within urban areas of the city. The initiative aims to prevent flooding and wildfires by removing vegetation, reeds, and accumulated debris that could obstruct water drainage or create blockages during heavy rainfall.

The works are scheduled to continue through the first quarter of next year, with some aspects of the campaign potentially extending toward 2027. Key locations for the intervention include Arroyo Judío, Arroyo el Taraje, Hornacino de Levante, Hornacino de Poniente, Arroyo Pantoja, Arroyo Dos Hermanas, Arroyo Las Abejeras, Arroyo La Galera, Arroyo Marimacho, Arroyo Victoria, Río Padrón, and Río Guadalobón.

The Council noted that its jurisdiction is limited to watercourses within urban zones; maintenance of rivers in other areas of the municipality falls under the responsibility of the Junta de Andalucía. Residents are advised to follow all signage in affected areas while work is underway.
