Esther Okoronkwo's Racist Abuse Sparks Condemnation Ahead of WAFCON 2026

Nigerian forward Esther Okoronkwo reported that hotel staff in Casablanca stole cash from her and several teammates ahead of Nigeria's opening match at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Moroccan police quickly arrested the employee, recovered the money and sentenced the suspect to six months in prison.

Following the theft, Okoronkwo was subjected to a flood of racist comments and monkey‑emoji posts on social media. Both the Nigeria Football Federation and her club, Canadian side AFC Toronto, issued statements condemning the abuse and reaffirming support for the player. The federation stressed that discrimination has no place in football and noted that the incident would not distract the Super Falcons from their campaign, which begins with a match against Malawi.
