Esther Rantzen dies after campaigning for assisted dying reform

Dame Esther Rantzen, a prominent campaigner for Childline and The Silver Line, has passed away following a terminal cancer diagnosis. In her final years, she became a leading voice in the movement for assisted dying reform in the United Kingdom.

Rantzen had previously disclosed her decision to join the Swiss clinic Dignitas, but noted the physical difficulties inherent in the process for British citizens. She explained that by the time her pain became unbearable, she was too physically fragile to travel to Switzerland, a situation she described as a ‘cruel bind’ for those seeking such options.

Her advocacy was instrumental in bringing the debate into the public eye and securing commitments for parliamentary consideration. She campaigned for the Terminally Ill Adults Bill, urging Members of Parliament to grant dying individuals more autonomy and choice. Her daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, and her siblings paid tribute to her lifelong dedication to standing up for vulnerable people.
