Estia newspaper celebrates 150 years in Nicosia
The historic newspaper Estia celebrated its 150th anniversary during a commemorative event held at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. The ceremony, titled ‘150 Years Estia – Greece – Cyprus’, honored the publication’s long-standing connection to the struggles of Hellenism and its role in the political and historical developments of Cyprus.
High-ranking officials attended the event, including Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Archbishop Georgios, and former Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Speakers emphasized the newspaper’s historical significance, with publisher Ioannis Filippakis describing Estia as a ‘beacon of dignity, cohesion, courage, and Greek continuity’ that remains committed to defending Cyprus.
Director Manolis Kottakis noted that celebrating the milestone in Cyprus was a ‘debt of honor,’ highlighting the newspaper’s role as a voice for Cyprus in Athens to advocate for national interests. The event served as both a historical retrospective and a reflection on the contemporary challenges facing the Greek community.
