Estonia and Cyprus launch cross-border digital prescription exchange

Estonia and Cyprus have established a cross-border digital prescription and health data exchange system. This allows citizens of both countries to use their domestic digital prescriptions to purchase necessary medications at pharmacies in the other nation.

In addition to prescription data, the two countries are exchanging patient health summaries. This includes critical medical information such as diagnoses, allergies, and medical history, which is displayed to healthcare professionals in their native language. This feature is intended to assist medical staff during emergencies when a patient may be unable to provide their own medical details.

To access these services in Cyprus, individuals must present an ID card or passport, allowing pharmacists to retrieve digital prescriptions electronically using the patient's personal identification code. This expansion adds Cyprus to a growing list of European Union countries participating in Estonia's cross-border digital prescription service.
