Estonia and France discuss nuclear deterrence cooperation

Estonia and France are engaged in discussions regarding Estonia's potential participation in France’s Forward Deterrence initiative. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal confirmed that talks are underway, noting that participation is not a simple process but requires specific capabilities and readiness.

French Ambassador Alexandre Escorcia acknowledged that nuclear deterrence is a component of the ongoing bilateral dialogue. He emphasized that France aims to be a reliable partner for Estonia, citing a history of reciprocal military support, including Estonian contributions to French operations in Africa.

While the defense relationship is strong, military analysts note significant hurdles. Unlike Finland, Sweden, or Poland, Estonia does not currently operate a fighter fleet capable of the same level of participation in strategic nuclear exercises. The discussions come amid a complex European security landscape and a push for greater European responsibility in regional defense.
