Estonia bans transit of Russian and Belarusian grain

Estonia has implemented a national ban on the transit of grain originating from Russia and Belarus through its territory and ports. The decision is a preemptive measure intended to prevent the country from becoming an alternative export route for Russian agricultural products as Moscow seeks new corridors following attacks on Ukrainian Black Sea ports.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that it would be ‘cynical’ to permit Russian grain exports through Estonian infrastructure while Russia continues to target Ukrainian ports and disrupt its grain exports to the global market.

Estonia is coordinating these efforts with Latvia and Lithuania to ensure that Russian grain is not transported through Baltic ports. Latvia has previously considered measures such as a 300 percent customs tariff on grain from Russia and Belarus to limit transit volumes.
