Estonia begins presidential election process in Riigikogu

Estonia is set to begin its presidential election process on September 2, with the 101-member Riigikogu tasked with indirectly selecting a successor to current President Alar Karis. To be elected, a candidate must secure at least 68 votes in parliament. If no candidate reaches this threshold after three rounds of voting, the decision will move to an Electoral College.

Candidate registration begins on August 21, with any group of at least one-fifth of the Riigikogu members eligible to nominate a candidate. The election process occurs through secret ballots, and candidates are permitted up to ten-minute presentations before voting rounds.

The election takes place amid domestic tensions regarding the cost of living, housing, and the treatment of Estonia’s Russian-speaking minority. Additionally, observers have noted risks of disinformation and foreign interference, including narratives that criticize frontrunner Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise or claim Estonian authorities are exaggerating Russian security threats to justify defense spending.
