Estonia ferry disaster marks 32nd anniversary

The 32nd anniversary of the Estonia ferry disaster marks a period of remembrance for the 852 people who lost their lives when the vessel sank in the Baltic Sea on the night of September 28, 1994. The tragedy remains the deadliest maritime accident in the Baltic Sea during peacetime.

Recent investigations conducted by the Estonian Safety Investigation Bureau, the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority, and the Finnish Safety Investigation Authority have addressed long-standing speculations regarding the cause of the sinking. Findings released in late 2025 suggest the disaster was caused by structural failures, specifically the breaking of the bow visor due to heavy wave loads, which allowed water to flood the car deck. The reports found no evidence of explosions or collisions with other objects.

The disaster led to significant changes in international maritime regulations, resulting in strengthened ship constructions and improved life-saving equipment to ensure greater safety in the shipping industry.
