Estonia government debt reaches 11.3 billion euros
Estonia is experiencing a rapid increase in public debt, marking a significant shift from its previous reputation for strict fiscal discipline. According to Statistics Estonia, the government sector's total debt reached 11.3 billion euros by the end of the second quarter of 2026, representing 26.1 percent of the nation's GDP.
Experts note that the debt has grown more than fivefold since 2015, when it stood at approximately 2.1 billion euros (10 percent of GDP). Key drivers for this increase include rising defense and security expenditures, as well as social protection costs related to an aging population. If current trends persist, the debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to approach 40 percent by the end of the decade.
Financial pressures are compounded by rising interest costs. Projections from Eesti Pank suggest that interest payments alone could reach 472 million euros by 2028. While the economy is expected to grow by 2.4 percent over the next two years, the increasing debt burden and structural budget deficits are raising concerns about the government's ability to respond to future economic downturns.
