Estonia marks 35th anniversary of independence restoration

Estonia is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its national independence. The milestone is marked by various ceremonies, concerts, and official events across the country, including major programs at Toompea and celebrations in Tartu.

In his anniversary speech, President Alar Karis emphasized the importance of social cohesion, urging citizens to value different perspectives and listen to one another rather than merely repeating their own views. He highlighted that a strong nation is built on caring for people, supporting the youth, and respecting diverse opinions.

To commemorate the occasion, the Riigikogu conference hall has been renamed the ‘20 August Hall,’ and a memorial plaque has been unveiled to honor the process of restoring independence. Officials noted that the name serves as a reminder that freedom is not self-evident and requires constant vigilance and responsibility.

While many celebrate the nation's progress, some discussions have also touched upon the distinction between the state and the government, reflecting on the challenges of social polarization and the ongoing work required to maintain independence and security.
