Estonia selects ‘Meie Erika’ for Oscar consideration
An independent commission organized by the Estonian Film Institute has selected German Golub’s feature film ‘Meie Erika’ as Estonia’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
The film is a nostalgic drama centered on the life of Estonian Olympic medalist Erika Salumäe. It explores themes of gender emancipation and national self-determination within the male-dominated Soviet sports world. The commission highlighted Karolin Jürise’s performance in the lead role.
‘Meie Erika’ marks the debut feature film for director German Golub, who previously received an Academy Award nomination for his student film in 2020. Golub expressed that the selection is a great honor for the entire team, noting that while the story is rooted in Estonian history, its themes of pursuing dreams and love are universal.
