Estonia strengthens security and industrial ties with US and Canada

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has addressed claims regarding the sale of national resources, clarifying that ongoing negotiations with the United States concerning rare earth metals do not grant Americans rights to Estonian mineral resources. Instead, the cooperation aims to develop existing industrial capacity and attract new investments to establish Estonia and the EU as a hub for rare earth processing and innovation, reducing Western dependence on Chinese supply chains.

In a separate diplomatic development, Foreign Minister Tsahkna met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New York alongside ministers from the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8). The meeting focused on strengthening transatlantic security, supporting Ukraine, and increasing pressure on Russia. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and emphasized cooperation in trade diversification, strategic partnerships, and security across the Baltic Sea, North Atlantic, and Arctic regions.
