Estonia warns of serious security threat from Russia

Riho Terras, an Estonian EU Member of Parliament and former army general, has described the security situation in Estonia as “serious.” He stated that the country cannot rule out Russia using military force to achieve political objectives and emphasized the need to prepare for the most dangerous scenarios.

Estonia plans to increase its defense spending to 5.4 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Following lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, the nation is specifically prioritizing air defense capabilities.

Terras noted that while the threat from Russia has been a constant for the Estonian population over the last 20 years, there is an increasing frequency of attacks occurring below the threshold of conventional warfare. Despite the potential for a Russian attack on NATO, Terras expressed confidence that the Russian military would not be successful.
