Estonian businesses launch energy portfolio cost analysis

Estonian businesses and state representatives have launched a joint quantitative analysis to determine the most cost-effective combination of electricity production, storage, and external connections for the country. The initiative, involving the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, aims to address rising consumption while ensuring energy security, supply reliability, and environmental compliance.

Participants seek to provide a concrete, calculation-based foundation for investment decisions, noting that the current Energy Economy Development Plan (ENMAK) 2035 lacks specific cost projections for various scenarios. The study will evaluate technologies such as wind, gas, solar, batteries, and nuclear energy on equal terms, prioritizing system costs over mere market prices to reflect the total expense consumers face.

The analysis is expected to be completed by the end of February, ahead of upcoming elections. It intends to identify the necessary scale and sequence for developing production and storage capacities as existing facilities reach the end of their lifespans.
