Martin Herem nominated as Estonia's new Defense Minister

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal has proposed former Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, Martin Herem, as the new Minister of Defence. Herem has accepted the position, reportedly requesting that defense spending remain fixed at 5% of GDP. This appointment follows the departure of Hanno Pevkur from the ministry.

In conjunction with the leadership change, the government is dismissing Kaimo Kuuse, the Chancellor of the Ministry of Defence, effective September 15. The dismissal has drawn criticism from political observers, such as Marika Priske, who expressed concern that removing a high-ranking official to accommodate a new minister could set a precedent for the politicization of the civil service.

The leadership transition occurs amid scrutiny regarding defense procurement. Investigations by the European Public Prosecutor's Office are reportedly looking into transactions involving the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (RKIK) and companies such as Datasel, following allegations of irregular dealings involving shell companies and large-scale defense contracts.
