Estonian MPs demand urgent funding for special care crisis

A group of 31 members of the Riigikogu, representing all parliamentary parties including coalition and non-aligned members, has submitted a formal statement to Prime Minister Kristen Michal regarding a deepening crisis in special care services.

The statement highlights a critical funding shortage, noting that the need for additional resources has grown to 30 million euros. Currently, approximately 2,200 people are on waiting lists for services, with over 1,000 awaiting 24-hour special care. For those with extreme support needs, the average wait time is 2.5 years.

Helmen Kütt, deputy chair of the Social Democratic faction, stated that the lack of funding prevents the creation of new service positions and the provision of dignified wages for workers. The shortage often forces individuals to remain at home or in inappropriate settings, such as hospitals or shelters, which may compromise the safety and dignity of both patients and staff. The signatories are demanding that the government allocate necessary additional funds in the 2027 state budget.
