Estonian opposition files no-confidence motion against Michal government

Opposition parties in the Estonian Riigikogu have submitted a motion of no confidence against the government led by Prime Minister Kristen Michal. The motion is supported by members of the Centre Party, Isamaa, and EKRE, along with nine non-aligned MPs.

Opposition leaders cite several reasons for the move, including economic instability, national security concerns, and a perceived lack of competence among ministers. Lauri Laats of the Centre Party highlighted public anxiety regarding rising costs, noting that 51% of citizens feel economically insecure. He criticized the government for planning future tax increases instead of lowering fuel and food prices.

Helir-Valdor Seeder of Isamaa argued that the administration has undermined Estonia’s international credibility, specifically pointing to decisions regarding defense and sanctions exemptions for the Solikamsk magnesium plant. Additionally, Martin Helme of EKRE criticized the government’s handling of national finances and the lack of clarity regarding the country’s energy future.
