Estonian political tension rises over presidential election methods

In Estonia, political tensions have surfaced regarding the presidential selection process. During the inauguration of the president in the Riigikogu, Ülle Madise delivered a speech emphasizing the value of every individual and the importance of trust, culture, and education in maintaining Estonian independence.

Simultaneously, members of the EKRE party organized a protest in front of Toompea Castle. Led by Martin Helme and presidential candidate Mart Helme, demonstrators demanded a change to the constitution to allow for the direct election of the president by the people. The protesters argued that the current system, where the president is chosen by the Riigikogu, makes the head of state politically dependent and lacks public mandate. EKRE has repeatedly proposed legislative changes to reform the election process, though these have been rejected by coalition members.
