Estonian Prime Minister denies US pressure to soften Russia rhetoric
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal has denied reports that the United States pressured Baltic authorities to moderate their public stance regarding the Russian threat. The denial follows reports from Reuters, citing anonymous sources, suggesting the US administration sought to limit the emphasis on Russian aggression in public statements.
Michal stated that he has not received any direct remarks of this nature. He emphasized that Estonia will not stop speaking out about the threat posed by Russia as long as the country continues to kill civilians, women, and children. He argued that maintaining pressure and supporting Ukraine is the only way to force Vladimir Putin to change his objectives.
While top Estonian politicians have pledged to maintain their current rhetoric, some diplomats have expressed caution. Jaap Ora, a former Estonian diplomat, warned that an overly sharp tone could lead to international fatigue and the potential marginalization of Estonia on the global stage. Michal noted that during a previous meeting with US President Donald Trump at a NATO summit, the American message focused on European nations increasing their own defense spending, a goal he stated Estonia is actively pursuing.
