Estonian PM Kristen Michal refuses to soften criticism of Putin

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal has stated he will not moderate his rhetoric regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite reports that Pentagon officials have privately urged Baltic allies to tone down their language.

According to reports citing four sources familiar with the matter, Pentagon officials, including policy chief Elbridge Colby, have requested that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania exercise more restraint. US officials reportedly expressed concern that certain European statements, such as describing Russia as a “rat in a corner,” could undermine continental security and provoke the Russian government.

Michal rejected the notion of appeasement, describing Putin as a dictator who kills women and children. He maintained that Estonia would continue to speak openly about the Russian threat, noting that he had not personally received any formal request from the United States to alter his diplomatic tone.
