Estonian Water Companies Association advises flushing pipes after summer

The Estonian Water Companies Association (EVEL) advises residents, schools, and businesses to flush their water systems after long periods of inactivity. As people return to schools, workplaces, and homes following the summer break, stagnant water in building pipes may allow microorganisms to accumulate.

Because water quality within a building's internal plumbing is the responsibility of the building owner rather than the water utility, EVEL recommends running the cold water tap until the temperature begins to drop consistently. Since pipe sizes vary, there is no universal time limit, but the arrival of fresh water can be identified when the water temperature stops decreasing. If the smell, taste, or color of the water remains unusual after flushing, residents should contact their local water utility.
