Estremoz health authorities monitor impetigo cases among children

Health authorities in Estremoz, Portugal, are monitoring cases of impetigo, a bacterial skin infection, affecting approximately 20 individuals, including children and students in pre-school and school-age groups.

The Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC) confirmed that the Public Health Unit is tracking the cases in coordination with the local school cluster. While initial communications from ULSAC had denied a public health issue, the agency has since confirmed the monitoring of the situation.

Health officials have stated that the situation is not a widespread outbreak but rather a series of identified cases that are being managed. To prevent further transmission, schools and the community have been advised to increase hygiene measures, such as disinfecting shared spaces and frequent handwashing. Impetigo is contagious and can be spread through direct contact with lesions or contaminated objects like towels and toys.
