Estremoz nursing home Influenza A outbreak death toll rises to six
The death toll from an Influenza A outbreak at a nursing home in Estremoz, Alentejo, has risen to six. The outbreak is affecting the Lar da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Veiros.
According to the Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC), one of three residents hospitalized at the Évora hospital died on Monday night following a confirmed Influenza A infection. Of the nine residents from the facility who sought emergency care at the Évora hospital since last Wednesday, four have died: two on Thursday, one on Sunday afternoon, and one on Monday night. Four others have been discharged, while one remains hospitalized.
In addition to the four deaths at the hospital, two deaths were recorded at the nursing home on September 20, when the outbreak began. While two other elderly residents died between Sunday and Tuesday, ULSAC noted that these cases have not yet been laboratory-confirmed as Influenza A, making it currently impossible to establish a definitive link to the virus.
Health teams from the Estremoz Personalized Health Care Unit are continuing to monitor the situation in coordination with the facility's medical staff.
