Estudiantes advances to Copa Libertadores final after penalty shootout win over Flamengo

Estudiantes de La Plata has secured a place in the 2026 Copa Libertadores final after defeating Flamengo in a penalty shootout at the Maracanã. Following a 0-0 draw in both legs of the semifinal series, the Argentine side triumphed 3-2 from the penalty spot, fueled by a standout performance from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who saved three penalties.

Despite playing with ten men for much of the second half following the expulsion of Baltasar Rodríguez, Estudiantes maintained defensive discipline against a dominant Flamengo side. The final will be held on November 28 at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, where Estudiantes will face Palmeiras.

In the aftermath of the match, Flamengo has filed a formal protest with CONMEBOL. The Brazilian club is contesting the eligibility of Estudiantes defender Marcos Rojo, alleging an irregular inclusion in the squad. While Estudiantes maintains that Rojo was legally registered following a favorable ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), CONMEBOL is reviewing the case. Estudiantes has been notified and has until next week to submit a formal response.
