Eswatini adopts impact-based forecasting and addresses El Niño risks
Eswatini is implementing Impact-Based Forecasting (IBF) to enhance disaster preparedness and early warning systems. This approach, supported by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, aims to move beyond predicting weather conditions to explaining the potential consequences for communities, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
During a media engagement workshop, Victor Mahlalela, CEO of the National Disaster Risk Management Authority (NDRMA), emphasized that the goal is to provide actionable information that helps citizens understand necessary responses to weather hazards. He noted that the media plays a critical role in ensuring these warnings reach the public in an understandable format.
In light of a predicted El Niño, the NDRMA and the Eswatini Meteorological Service are also addressing agricultural concerns. NDRMA Director Victor Mahlalela advised farmers to continue cultivation despite the weather risks, stating that it is better to attempt farming than to face total food insecurity. He urged farmers to consult Ministry of Agriculture extension officers to select suitable seed varieties and crops for their specific locations.
