Eswatini cybercrime losses exceed E15.9 million annually
Cyber-related losses in Eswatini have exceeded E15.9 million in a single year, according to the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM). Acting Chief Executive Ozzie Thakatha reported that these losses stem from various crimes, including mobile money fraud, phishing, identity theft, and fraudulent banking transactions.
During the launch of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026, ESCCOM officials warned that scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using fake social media accounts and fraudulent promotions that appear legitimate. The commission urged the public to protect sensitive information such as passwords and PINs, noting that scammers often create a false sense of urgency to pressure victims.
In addition to financial theft, authorities highlighted social risks including cyberbullying, harassment, and online child exploitation. The Royal Eswatini Police Service has also issued warnings regarding 'BoFacata' scams, particularly as the festive season approaches. Police noted that scammers sometimes impersonate officers via WhatsApp using official logos to gain trust. Authorities are calling for increased collaboration between the government, law enforcement, and the private sector to combat these growing digital threats.
