Eswatini begins annual Umhlanga Reed Dance ceremony
Thousands of Imbali from across Eswatini have gathered at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence to begin the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance ceremony. The participants, dressed in traditional regalia, are participating in a series of cultural rites intended to celebrate national identity, unity, and heritage.
As part of the proceedings, King Mswati III commissioned the maidens at the Ngabezweni Royal Residence to begin their journey to designated reed-harvesting areas. The King emphasized the importance of safety, discipline, and mutual respect during the event.
Under this year's arrangements, senior Imbali will travel to Mpisi Farm to cut reeds, while younger maidens will proceed to Masundvwini. The ceremony includes a courtesy call to Her Majesty, the Indlovukazi, before the groups proceed on foot to perform traditional songs and dances.
