Eswatini implements costed national disability action plan
Eswatini is working to implement the Costed Eswatini National Disability Action Plan (2024–2028), which focuses on linking disability commitments to specific financial resources. During a recent engagement for communications officers, officials emphasized that meaningful inclusion requires deliberate budgeting and institutional planning rather than just commemorative events.
Lwandle Simelane, Secretary General of the Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO, urged communications practitioners to reshape disability narratives. She warned that language such as “normal” can unintentionally exclude persons with disabilities and called for professionals to adopt disability etiquette and adhere to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
To ensure the action plan is effective, experts suggested implementing a tracking system to monitor disability-related budgeting across both public and private sectors. The initiative aims to move disability inclusion into the everyday operations of government ministries, departments, and agencies.
