ETA Terrorism Legacy Commemorated Through Victim Testimonies

Reflections on the impact of ETA terrorism continue to emerge as various media works commemorate the anniversary of the group's definitive cessation of armed activity.

A new Netflix documentary, ‘Miguel Ángel Blanco: Las 48 horas que lo cambiaron todo’, explores the 1997 kidnapping and murder of PP councilor Miguel Ángel Blanco. Journalist Jon Sistiaga, who was 29 at the time of the event, discussed the profound shift in Basque and Spanish society following the incident and the eventual end of the group's violence.

Additionally, the book ‘La mochila’ by Ander Izagirre provides a detailed account of the life of Alberto Muñagorri, a child from Renteria who lost a leg at age ten due to an exploding backpack. The work examines the broader physical and psychological devastation caused by ETA, including the social silence and the complex experiences of both victims and those affected by the surrounding political environment.
