ETECSA admits error caused false earthquake alerts in Cuba

The state telecommunications company ETECSA has admitted that a massive false earthquake alert sent to thousands of mobile users in Cuba was caused by a technical-human error. The incident occurred during internal network testing, where specialists in the Core Network area misconfigured a planned simulation, causing the notification to be broadcast to the general public instead of remaining within a controlled testing environment.

The false alarm caused widespread panic and tension across several provinces, prompting many residents to evacuate their homes and buildings. The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) and Civil Defense officials confirmed there was no actual seismic activity or imminent risk.

ETECSA issued an official apology for the distress caused and stated that an investigation has been conducted. The company noted that measures have been taken regarding those responsible and that protocols are being reviewed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
