Etesian outbreak explains intense Meltemi wind activity
Meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas has provided a scientific explanation for the current intense period of Meltemi winds, referred to in international literature as an ‘Etesian outbreak.’
This phenomenon is not a new atmospheric event but rather an intensified phase of the seasonal Etesian winds. The increased intensity is driven by a specific distribution of barometric systems: high pressure over the Balkans and Southeast Europe combined with low pressure over the Eastern Mediterranean and Anatolia. This creates a strong barometric dipole that fuels northern airflows across the Aegean Sea.
According to scientific research by Evangelos Tyrlis and Johannes Lellieveld, these Etesian outbreaks typically occur between mid-July and mid-August and are closely linked to the development of strong anticyclonic fields in the Balkan region.
