ETF market expands with new thematic funds amid rising technical complexity
The exchange-traded fund (ETF) market continues to expand, bringing both new thematic opportunities and complexities regarding technical knowledge. In Italy, two new thematic ETFs developed by HANetf have been listed on Borsa Italiana. These include an ETF focused on the drone sector, which tracks the VettaFi Drones UCITS Index to capture growth in military, civil, and commercial unmanned aerial vehicles, and another targeting the potential reconstruction of Ukraine. While these thematic tools allow investors to target specific long-term trends, they often carry higher concentration and volatility compared to diversified index funds.
Simultaneously, the increasing complexity of the ETF landscape is highlighting knowledge gaps among market participants. A recent industry quiz demonstrated that even experienced professionals struggle with the intricacies of ETF mechanics, capital flows, and tax treatments. The rapid proliferation of diverse products has made it difficult for investors to look beyond marketing messages to understand underlying structures, such as secondary market trading and index replication.
