ETH Zurich researchers propose integrating cement plants with Direct Air Capture
Researchers at ETH Zurich have identified a method to integrate cement production with Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, potentially transforming cement plants from major emitters into carbon removal facilities. Cement manufacturing currently accounts for approximately 5% to 8% of global CO2 emissions, driven by both fossil fuel combustion and the chemical process of calcination, where limestone is heated to produce quicklime.
The proposed approach utilizes calcium looping, a process that leverages the same calcium compounds used in cement production. By using electric-powered kilns instead of fossil fuels for calcination, the system can capture the CO2 released during the process. In collaboration with the US-based company Heirloom Carbon Technologies, the study suggests this integration could significantly reduce the climate impact of cement production by 2050.
