Ethan Flynn-Pitcher, a 25-year-old speed climber from Brentwood, British Columbia, has become the first Canadian to break the five-second barrier in speed climbing. During a training session at The Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich on August 13, Flynn-Pitcher clocked a time of 4.996 seconds.

Flynn-Pitcher’s coach and the gym's manager, Libor Hroza, noted that breaking the five-second mark is a critical threshold for athletes aiming for the podium. The climber now prepares to compete in the World Climbing Pan American Championships in Curitiba, Brazil, scheduled for August 22 to 23, where he aims to officially record the milestone in a competitive setting.
