Ethanol tanker falls at Second Rainbow Bridge in Lagos
A major disaster was averted in Lagos State after a truck carrying 33,000 litres of ethanol fell at the Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo Odofin area. The incident occurred around 11:00 am when the FOTON truck attempted to negotiate a turn on the bridge.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident was caused by speeding, which led to the truck’s turntable detaching and falling onto the roundabout, blocking the roadway. Due to the volatile nature of ethanol and the high risk of fire or explosion, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) deployed the Eagle Response Team to cordon off the area and manage crowds.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service utilized chemical foam to suppress fumes and prevent secondary incidents. No casualties or loss of life were reported during the event. The Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority assisted in securing the scene and managing traffic flow.
