Ethanol's role in reducing European vehicle emissions
Ethanol is playing an increasingly significant role in the European automotive landscape as a means to reduce environmental impact without requiring the immediate replacement of existing internal combustion engine fleets.
Derived from plant materials such as sugar beets, sugarcane, or cereals through fermentation, bioethanol can be mixed with gasoline to lower greenhouse gas emissions. While the petroleum industry dominated the 20th century, current European policies aimed at cutting emissions are driving the use of these renewable fuels, which can utilize existing refueling infrastructure to reduce oil dependency.
