eThekwini officials secure removal of DA ‘water tanker mafia’ billboard

An election billboard erected by the Democratic Alliance (DA) along the N2 in Durban has been removed following legal threats from eThekwini municipal officials. The advertisement featured Mayor Cyril Xaba, City Manager Musa Mbhele, and Water and Sanitation Executive Director Ednick Msweli, alongside a message regarding a ‘water tanker mafia’.

Attorneys for the officials demanded the removal of the billboard and a public apology within 24 hours, arguing the content was defamatory and implicated them in organized criminal activity. While the DA initially refused to remove the sign unless ordered by a court, the billboard was ultimately taken down by the company responsible for its placement, which cited a desire to remain neutral and protect business interests.

The DA maintains that the term ‘water tanker mafia’ was intended to highlight the city's reliance on private water tankers and the ongoing water crisis, rather than to accuse specific individuals of criminality. Meanwhile, the eThekwini Municipality has welcomed the removal, stating that while political debate is necessary, it must not descend into the defamation of public officials.
