Ethel Caterham celebrates 117th birthday as world's oldest person

Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest living person, celebrated her 117th birthday on Friday, August 21, at a senior residence in Lightwater, Surrey. Born in Hampshire in 1909, Caterham’s longevity has been officially certified by Guinness World Records and LongeviQuest.

Her life has spanned significant historical eras, including the reigns of multiple British monarchs, both World Wars, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Having lived through over a century of global transformation, she previously met King Charles III.

Caterham attributes her long life to maintaining a positive attitude, staying active, and avoiding conflict. She has shared advice such as ‘never argue with anyone’ and staying engaged with life through activities like playing bridge.
