Etëhem Haxhiademi and the legacy of the drama ‘Skënderbeu’

Etëhem Haxhiademi is recognized as a foundational figure in Albanian tragedy, known for introducing a new dramatic model based on antiquity, mythology, national history, and biblical traditions. His works, including ‘Ulisi’, ‘Akili’, and ‘Aleksandri’, explore complex moral, political, and human conflicts such as power, honor, and responsibility.

His drama ‘Skënderbeu’, written in the 1930s, is a significant five-act tragedy centered on the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. The work depicts his efforts to defend Albania and Christianity against Ottoman conquest while simultaneously addressing the internal moral and political conflicts within the Albanian people.
