Ethereum Economic Zone executes first atomic L1-to-L2 transaction
The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has successfully demonstrated the first atomic Layer 1 (L1) to Layer 2 (L2) transaction on the Ethereum mainnet. During the technical demo, 0.001 ETH was transferred from Ethereum’s base chain to an L2 network in a single, all-or-nothing operation. This ensures that the L1 transfer and the rollup state update either both occur or both fail, achieving what developers call “atomic synchronous composability.”
Led by Gnosis and Zisk and supported by the Ethereum Foundation, the EEZ project aims to unify Ethereum’s fragmented liquidity by connecting various L2 networks into a single ecosystem. While the transaction was a successful proof of concept, the core software remains in its early stages. The project’s roadmap includes developing two-way calls, nested cross-chain calls, and real-time proving through 2027.
Prior to the mainnet demonstration, the team conducted audits and tested the system against protocols such as CoW Swap and Uniswap v4. The initiative seeks to eliminate the need for traditional bridges by allowing rollups and the mainnet to interact directly in single transactions.
